Chinese Immersion students at Fiddlers Elementary

Applications are now open for Spanish immersion at East Elementary and Chinese immersion at Fiddlers Elementary. Current kindergarten students are eligible for consideration to enter the programs in first grade for the 2024-24 school year. Chinese Immersion will also consider current first-grade students for entrance in second-grade. Fiddlers Elementary is hosting a parent night at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 6, in the elementary school gym, 475 E. 1935 North to answer questions about the Chinese Dual Immersion program.

In dual immersion, students learn in their native language for half of the day and in a target language the other half of the day. Decades of research show that immersion programs help students attain high levels of second language proficiency better than all other programs. Students involved in immersion also show greater cognitive flexibility, focus, memory, and superior problem solving skills. These students also enjoy an enhanced understanding of their native language. Immersion students are more aware and demonstrate more acceptance and understanding toward other people and cultures. Looking into the future, we recognize that bilingual high school graduates are better prepared for today’s career opportunities.
