Care and Support

The information below was shared with school leaders in Iron County School District as we approach the one-year mark of the Haight tragedy on Jan. 4. Many of the tips can be useful for parents and community members as well.  Additional resources, including information about a two-day intensive trauma retreat are also available by clicking on the links below.

Managing Anniversary Reactions After Trauma

During this time, it's essential to foster an environment of care and support, not only for oneself but for colleagues, students, and staff.

Promote Awareness and Sensitivity: Acknowledge the upcoming anniversary sensitively. Encourage an open and supportive atmosphere where individuals feel comfortable discussing their emotions or seeking support if needed. Remind everyone to be considerate and respectful of each other's feelings during this time.

Provide Resources for Support: Ensure that there are resources available for anyone who might need support. This could include counseling services, hotlines, or support groups.

Encourage Self-Care: Emphasize the importance of self-care and well-being. Encourage those affected to engage in activities that promote mental and emotional wellness, such as exercise, meditation, journaling, or spending time with loved ones. Modeling self-care behaviors can set a positive example for the entire community.

Supportive Communication: Encourage open and supportive communication channels. Encourage faculty and staff to check in with each other and with students, offering support or a listening ear if needed. Remind everyone that it's okay to talk about feelings and emotions surrounding the anniversary.

Respect Personal Boundaries: Recognize that individuals may have varying levels of comfort in discussing or acknowledging the anniversary. Respect personal boundaries and avoid pressuring anyone to engage in discussions or activities related to the event if they're not comfortable.

Emphasize Unity and Support: Remind the community of the importance of unity and support during challenging times. Encourage a culture of empathy, compassion, and understanding, emphasizing that everyone is part of a supportive community that cares for one another.

Approaching the anniversary with mindfulness and sensitivity can create an environment where individuals feel supported and cared for, promoting emotional well-being.
